The Clacks' Madagascar Holiday, August, 2018

Tougher than we'd imagined!

In August, 2018, Jenny and I went on holiday to Madagascar for a fortnight. We travelled with Temple World Alumni Tours, which is specifically targeted at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Although neither Jenny nor I attended either of those universities, we were eligible because Jenny was Emeritus Professor in the Department of Zoology in Cambridge.

The trip was rather more strenuous than we'd expected and we did struggle on one particular day. Jenny had been having chemotherapy in the spring and although her consultant had OK'd the trip, in fact we think he was over-optimistic about her rate of recovery.

We took over a thousand photo's and videos, and this website is intended to present a small selection of the more successful of those. There are three sections about the wildlife, Andasibe-Mantadia rainforests, Ranomafana rainforest and Isalo-Ifaty dry forests, and two sections about the island more generally. The material in the latter is presented only approximately chronologically.

We flew to the capital, Antananarivo, (aka Tana), then drove roughly east to the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, where we stayed for three nights, visiting the rainforest both days. From there we drove back to Tana, then south to Antsirabe, where we stayed the night, then south-east to the Ranomafana National Park, where we stayed two nights. After that westwards to Isalo NP for two nights, and on to Ifaty on the coast for two nights. Thence we flew back to Tana for one night, visiting the Summer Palace the next day, before flying home late that night.
